Description

Also sometimes called
Filberts.
History / Background:
One of the five sacred
nourishments God bestowed to human beings, according to an ancient
Chinese manuscript, hazelnuts have been known to the world for
nearly 5000 years. They came to America only recently as a former
sailor for the Hudson Bay Company planted the first hazelnut tree
in Oregon in 1858. 99% of U.S. hazelnuts are grown in Oregon.
Unlike any other fruit-bearing
tree, the hazelnut blooms and pollinates in the middle of winter.
The pollen stays dormant until early spring, when the nut begins
to form. Hazelnuts mature during summer months and are normally
harvested in October.
