Peas

Pisum sativum

Origin / Harvest:

  • USA / September–October
  • Canada / September–October

Description & History

Although its exact history is unknown, general consensus is that the pea originated in the region that spans from the Middle East across to Central Asia. Modern pea varieties were produced from centuries of cultivation and selection for certain desired characteristics in both Europe and Asia. In the 19th century, the pea played a critical role in Gregor Mendel's plant breeding experiments that paved the fundamental theories of genetics.

We offer green and yellow dried peas, available whole or split.

Uses

Compared to their fresh counterparts, dried peas have a flavor more earthy than sweet. Pea soup is the most popular use of the dried pea and has recipes dating back to the ancient world. In addition to serving as a soup base, dried peas can add their sweet flavor and texture to any pasta or grain dishes as well as casseroles.

Nutrition

Dried peas are an excellent source of protein and dietary fiber. Naturally low in fat, they are also a good source of B vitamins and minerals including phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, and iron.
